"Au But" - "To the Goal" Bronze by A. Boucher

France
Circa 1880
This award winning sculpture is considered by many to be one of the most energetic and bold examples of late 19th Century French art. When the plaster model of this was first shown in "The Salon" in 1886, the artist, Alfred Boucher, won a 1st Class Medal. Oddly enough, it was met with mixed reviews, obviously because it was so far ahead of its time. This piece bears no resemblance to what was typically done in the 1880s. The critic Paul Leroy said it had, "Extreme vigor, an admirable intensity of life, the greatest movement and a rare suppleness of modeling, in short, one of the masterpieces which honors French art." In our opinion, that says it all. Alfred Boucher was always a sculptor ahead of his time, and this is his masterpiece. In the new edition of the book, "Bronzes of the 19th Century, Dictionary of Sculptors" by Pierre Kjellberg, this statue is now on the cover. This is a large and definitive book. What does that say about this piece? There is not much more we can say. There is so much movement to this sculpture, one hardly knows which angle to view it at. As you walk around, you see all the artistry that went into the making of this sculpture. We, being bronze dealers for over 30 years, consider this to be one of the greatest sculptures ever produced. The piece bears his signature, "A. Boucher" as well as the foundry seal "Siot."

Art Nouveau Bronze Figure of a Nude Maiden by Bouval

France
Circa 1900
Maurice Bouval is considered one of the great art nouveau sculptors of the period. His statues are some of the most sought after of the period and style. Bouval worked in France in the late 19th Century to early 20th Century and produced some of the most sinewy and luscious sculptures. This is a great example of his work. The gilding is superb and really brings to life this beautiful woman. From every angle of viewing, this is a masterpiece. Her face is so natural and classic in beauty, which is often not the case in many art nouveau sculptures. This piece is flawless in composition, detail, and condition.
